Senior Wellness Program

old_dog.jpgHigh Desert Animal Hospital offers a progressive new approach to veterinary care. Our Senior Program embraces a focus on preventative medicine based on the specific life-stage of your pet. Each patient is assessed individually based on factors such as species, breed, age and environmental challenges. Next we offer recommendations for prevention, nutrition, and diagnostic work-ups appropriate for your pet. The key to High Desert Animal Hospital Senior Program is an emphasis on the wellness health examination. Each senior pet will receive a comprehensive physical exam and age appropriate diagnostics (such as blood work and urinalysis). Dogs and cats age at a much faster rate than people; pets are considered to be seniors at the age of 7, although the larger breed dogs may be seniors as young as 6. Age is not a disease, but there are certain conditions and ailments that can come along with aging that can affect your pet's health and comfort.

In general, some early warning signs that your pet may be having a problem are:

Increased thirst and/or urination
Loss of bladder control or breaking house training
Repeated vomiting
Bad breath, drooling, or changes in appetite
Excessive panting or exercise intolerance, lethargy
Lumps or changes in hair coat
Change in appetite - eating more or less than usual
Changes in behavior such as "spacing out" or excessive whining
Unusual bowel habits - diarrhea or constipation
Changes in body weight - gaining or losing weight
Trouble getting up or lameness
Like people, dogs and cats are prone to common senior illness.
