November and December 'Winter Wellness' Special

Winter Wellness Special

winter_puppy.bmpHappy Holidays! Winter is upon us once again. The weather is quickly bringing colder weather, which may have some implications for your pet. The arrival of the holiday season will likely come with much stress for you and your family, but it is important not to forget your pet in all the commotion. We encourage all outdoor dogs and cats to be brought indoors for some relief from the elements. If it is too cold for you to be outside, it is usually too cold for them as well. Also, take care to make sure your pet does not ingest anything harmful. Poinsettia plants, Christmas tree preservatives, snow sprays, tree ornaments, tinsel/ribbons, de-icing salt, chocolate, and alcohol are considered moderately toxic and should stay out of reach of animals. Mistletoe (especially berries), epoxy adhesives, and antifreeze are highly toxic to pets and ingestion should be avoided at all costs. And, as always, table scraps are not encouraged. Be particularly gentle with elderly and arthritic pets during the winter. The cold can leave their joints extremely stiff and tender, and they may become more awkward than usual, so make sure they have a thick, soft bed in a warm room for the chilly nights. Also, watch stiff and arthritic pets if you walk them outside; a bad slip on the ice could be very painful and cause a significant injury.

It is a good idea to take your animals for a winter check-up before winter kicks in. Your veterinarian can check to make sure they don't have any medical problems that will make them more vulnerable to illnesses brought about by the cold. Here at High Desert Animal Hospital, we would like to encourage this by offering a discount in the months of November and December on a Winter Wellness Exam. This would include:

  • Comprehensive physical exam
  • Dental health exam
  • Weight and nutrition consultation
  • Blood chemistry
  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Urinalysis
  • Nail trim
  • Express Anal glands
