Heartworm disease is very serious and can be fatal. The disease is transmitted by mosquitos when they bite. The parasite enters the blood stream and migrates to the heart. These worms lodge in the heart chamber causing problems in the circulatory system. This disease can be treated if caught early enough, however, it is very costly, the treatment can be painful and the animal must be confined for a number of weeks. The heartworm preventative tablet kills the baby worms, preventing them from becoming adults. We recommend a monthly preventative treatment based on weight, given year-round. As your puppy grows, you may need to weigh them monthly and purchase a heartworm preventative tablet that corresponds to their weight. Your puppy should be heartworm tested once yearly.
Another benefit to giving most heartworm preventatives is the added ingredient of a monthly gastrointestinal parasite deworming agent. Most tablets not only protect against heartworm disease, but also deworm you pet monthly for common gastrointestinal parasites like hookworms and roundworms (which can be transmitted to humans).
High Desert Animal Hospital sells heartworm prevention by the month or in a six-month packet for your convenience.
